For almost 2 years, Mycorena has been working towards commercializing sustainable mycoprotein created using circular economy. With a validated backtrack on experimenting and validating the use of filamentous fungi for fish feed applications, the road led us to an expanded form of our product. Our concept of using fungi as a protein source has been refined, the process was further developed, and our product became a better version of itself. At this stage, we also felt confident on exploring a new segment for application of our mycoprotein: the market of vegan protein and food ingredients. To celebrate all these developments, our mycoprotein needed a new brand name, and Promyc was born!

What is Promyc™ mycoprotein?

Promyc is the fastest-growing mycoprotein brand in Scandinavia (for those not familiar with the term, mycoprotein simply means “protein from fungi”). It is essentially an ingredient for food products or feed formulations, and since Promyc™ mycoprotein contains more than 55% protein, it is an ideal replacement for common protein sources like meat or soy.

Why do we need mycoprotein?

The world population is growing incessantly, and more people means more mouths to feed. Until 2050, world food demand is expected to increase, somewhere from 59% to almost double! Since we know that up to a third of all produced food is lost or wasted, it’s easy to realize that we need to do food more efficiently if we want it to feed everyone in the world in the near future.

A big part of our diet is protein. We get it from animal foods like meat, eggs and milk, but also plants like soy, peas or lentils. Protein is very important for our diet, and even more with an aging population. A big problem is, many of the protein sources we eat are extremely inefficient to produce. Beef is largely known to be the worst protein source in terms of sustainability, since to make 1 kg of beef it takes up to 15.000 L of water and 13 kg of CO2 emissions. Plant sources, even if better than animal ones, have also its sustainability problems. Soy beans culture cause massive deforestation of forests, and agriculture in general takes large areas of arable land, degrading it with extensive use.

Mycoprotein, like other sources of single-cell protein, allows for the production of protein with much higher resource efficiency! And while we can justify the increased sustainability already, mycoprotein has existed already in the market for some time. So the question is, how are we making it differently?

Mycoprotein and circular economy: a win-win for making better food

At Mycorena, we focus on creating fungi protein from wasted resources from the food industry. What this means in practice is that food that is wasted or lost during the processing in different food industries can now be recovered in a valuable manner and be re-introduced in the food production chain. The fungi grown from food waste can be processed either as a protein-rich food ingredient for food products directly, or as a sustainable feed ingredient to grow animals using less resources. In short, we make more with less. More food with less resources and less waste.

What is new in Promyc™?

As a product, Promyc™ is now available in 2 different forms depending on the target segment where it is applied.

The newest product branch for our mycoprotein brand is Promyc™ Vega. Vega is targeted towards producers of vegan food products that require protein-rich ingredients that reduce the final product’s environmental impact while offering a high protein content, fiber and texture. We are developing Promyc™ Vega with the support of leading companies in the food sector to ensure the optimal level of taste and form, while maintain the product safety and sustainability aspects.

Its most developed form, Promyc™ Aqua, is a feed ingredient with 55% protein content developed for aquaculture purposes. It is now at the production scale-up step and it is aimed at targeting the sustainability issues from using fishmeal or soybeans as protein sources in fish feed manufacturing. We produce this form of mycoprotein from different waste sources, optimizing the process for lowering carbon impact and production costs. Promyc™ Aqua offers feed producers a premium solution with improved environmental impact and additional performance benefits compared to soymeal.
